Description:

Western Greece, Apulia, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A beautiful and large vessel, made in honor of a woman presented inside the central Naiskos on the face of the vessel. The woman is depicted seated inside the white-walled temple, upon a footed couch, the cushion appearing to be of fur, wearing a long robe with veil that covers all but her exposed right breast, arms, and face, next to a table with votive offering and fillet. Standing on outside of Naiskos is a naked soldier to the right, wearing a helmet with long white painted plume and shin guards, while holding a long spear, tall white shield, and robe draped over left arm while right arm leans against temple with a fleece above him. To the left is a robed woman holding an incense burner and, with elaborate hairdo, and offering plate above her. Below narrative is a sea-wave pattern, above vertical parallel lines, while large palmettes fill in the rear and sides below handles. This hydria takes a very interesting color palette due to the miss-firing of it, creating a massive firing cloud which covers most of the vessel, making it seem like it is a red-on-red figure vessel with white highlights. The black paint that does remain has developed an incredible silvery iridescence. The uniqueness of this vessel makes it a perfect addition to any collection of Greek pottery! Size: 19"H (48.3 cm). Provenance: Ex-private New York, NY collection acquired in 1985; ex-private Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, MA, acquired 1970's. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
