Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. An enticing pottery figure in a curious pose - arms raised to hold a type of club before him while wearing a conch shell strapped to his head, indicating he may be a warrior, shaman, or a lord. Head cocked to his left, the figure grasps the weapon as though ready to strike, presumably to protect the tomb in which he was placed to guard. A satchel hangs from his shoulder, perhaps carrying additional weapons or supplies to aid in the deceased's journey to the underworld. A remarkable example of Colima funerary art and sculptural style with smoothly modeled forms, burnished warm red hues, complex posture, theatrical gestures, and passionate facial expression. Size: 7.3" W x 15.4" H (18.5 cm x 39.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
