East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A lovely glazed ceramic sculpture of the bodhisattva Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), "The Lord Who Gazes Down At The World", a bodhisattva portrayed as both male or female who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. Skillfully depicted with a tremendous amount of detail, the figure stands, face serene, body draped in elaborately-formed clothing and jewelry. The figure wears a lotus flower as a crown. The piece is accompanied by an antique custom wood stand. Size (including stand, which is strongly attached): 6.5" W x 17.45" H (16.5 cm x 44.3 cm)

  • Condition: The base of the porcelain has been repaired, as has the figure's nose. Great deposits on the figure's surface. Some losses to the glaze, notably on one arm, but generally pigment is in very fine condition. Wood stand, while antique, is not contemporary with the Ming Dynasty.
