Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A handsome, hollow-built pottery dog of sizable form exhibiting a powerful chest, stocky hind legs, and lengthy forelegs that hold his seated position steady. The charming canine companion peers forward with alert eyes, ears perked in full attention, and with a slight grin as if gently panting. His collar is decorated with applied nodules, perhaps intended to be spikes or buttons, and a thick loop on the verso was perhaps used as a leash ring. Dogs in Han Dynasty China held multifaceted roles, serving as loyal friends, guardians, hunting aids, and status symbols, all reflecting their significance in both practical and cultural contexts. Size: 17" L x 8.75" W x 20.125" H (43.2 cm x 22.2 cm x 51.1 cm)
