Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hollow-molded pottery figure of a sizable form depicting a stylized female cuchimilco (or "star-gazer") standing atop stocky legs. Her genitalia is delineated with incised striations, and a pair of small nodules centered on the black-painted chest are suggestive of breasts. Cupped hands project out from indiscernible shoulders, and her thick neck is decorated with a necklace of painted abstract zoomorphs. Coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a perky nose, a jutting chin, and cupped ears comprise the minimalist visage set atop the conical head, and applied black pigment defines the geometric and linear embellishments across her face. Size: 8.75" W x 19" H (22.2 cm x 48.3 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
