Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. An enormous, wheel-thrown pottery storage vesssel of a tall, amphora-like form with a narrow, rounded base, an inverted piriform body with a rolled shoulder, a corseted neckline, and a flared, everted rim. Storage vessels like this example were used to contain a plethora of different substances like foodstuffs, wine, oil, and others with a stopper typically made of plaster or stucco. Based on the inverted, tapered form, this urn was perhaps intended for transportation along trade routes or military marching lines. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 12.1" W x 20.5" H (30.7 cm x 52.1 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
