Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia or Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A wonderful example of a wheel-thrown pottery oinochoe (pouring vessel) of a sizable form with a discoid foot, an apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a tapered neck that terminates in a trefoil-style spout, and a thick handle arching between rim and shoulder. Dozens of shallow vertical ribs surround the body to create an elegant presentation, and the entire composition - save for the area beneath the foot - is enveloped with lustrous, jet-black glaze. Size: 6.8" W x 12.125" H (17.3 cm x 30.8 cm).

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA; ex-Harlan J. Berk, Chicago, Illinois, USA
