Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Earliest Horizon, Valdivian culture, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. A tall ancestor figure, finely carved from a creamy white jade, with anthropomorphic features. The overall form is cylindrical with a stylized face set at the top with hair or a headdress hanging downwards at the front to either side and down the back of her neck. The body is abstract with hands facing inwards at the center and incised circles to possibly indicate fingers. A shallow vertical line flares downward and forms the waist and legs. This figure has slightly feminine features, and may have been a fertility figure or an ancestor spirit. Size: 1.625" W x 12.75" H (4.1 cm x 32.4 cm); 13.25" H (33.7 cm) on included custom stand.
