Description:

East Africa, Tanzania, Zigua or Nyamwezi culture, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A pair of wooden figures with elongated forms, adorned with extensive beading. Cloth adhered to the heads anchors the beaded coiffures, while cloth arms with beaded fingers are nailed to the shoulders. Additional adornments include coconut shell discs strung on the waist and cowrie shells and seed beads sewn onto the leather skirts. The figures also feature goat or other ungulate horn tips, possibly hoof sheaths. Their cylindrical wooden torsos are polished smooth from years of handling. As part of the larger Bantu cultural complex, figural effigies were integral to ancestral, fertility, divination, and healing rituals, serving as connections between the human and spiritual realms. Often decorated with glass beads, cloth, and other materials, these objects held symbolic power and spiritual significance, believed to attract beneficial forces. Designs frequently blended cultural styles from neighboring groups. Size: 4" W x 23.75" H (10.2 cm x 60.3 cm)
