Western Africa / Sub-Saharan Africa, Mali, Djenne, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large, bell-shaped bed post, made from thick, heavy ceramic, with a narrow waist and capped by a large, ovoid opening. The exterior is painted a warm, earthy red, with incised bands around its body filled in with black pigment. Djenne is famous for its terracotta architecture, notably its Great Mosque, and for the town of Djenne-Djenno, now an archaeological site that was once an important trading town linked to Timbuktu on the trans-Saharan trade route.
