West Africa, Cote d'Ivoire or Liberia, Dan peoples, ca. 1970s CE. A hand-carved wood standing woman figure with slender symmetrical proportions and a lustrous black patina. She stands on long les that support wide hips with incised genitalia, pendulous breasts, and elongated neck incised with scarification. Her facial features are accented with metal teeth and oval eyes set into a concave face. Women figures were often commissioned by husbands to honor their wives and ancestors, highlighting the ideal characteristics of female beauty. Size: 6" L x 5" W x 24.75" H (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm x 62.9 cm); 26.5" H (67.3 cm) on included custom stand.
