Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Bangkok style, Ratanakosin, ca. 19th century CE. A tall standing Ratanakosin bronze Buddha, embellished with brilliant gold leaf, with a beautifully contoured face, donning lavish royal attire with characteristic flame like designs on shoulders and ears of crown, standing upon a four-tiered flame spiked throne further embellished with red pigment on each tier, and presenting both hands in the Vitarka mudra of teaching and reason; with the palms facing outward in a preaching gesture (note how the hands are held closer to the chest than in the Abhaya Mudra). The material of choice for Ratanakosin sculptors was bronze. These artists continued the incredible artistry that their Ayutthaya predecessors had started; however, wood became less favored. A striking Rattanakosin Buddha image possessing tantalizing and undeniable beauty. Size: 5.5" W at widest x 19.75" H (14 cm x 50.2 cm)
