Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A charming vessel with a round body, four legs, and twin serpent heads projecting from either side. The body of the vessel is decorated with incised mountain/wave triangular forms the legs have a stippled design and small projections that look like toes. The heads are open-mouthed, with fangs and tongues and rounded noses, and are clearly designed to be viewed from the side. In Tairona symbolism, serpents are common iconography, and often associated with felines and, sometimes, bats. Here, the feet of the vessel are those of a jaguar, and the body flows upwards to the serpents' heads. As some Tairona scholars have noted, although serpents and jaguars are quite far from each other in our modern understanding of animals as genetic families, to the Tairona, they were close jungle neighbors, and combining the two may have been an embodiment of their natural landscape.
