Description:

Pre-Columbian, Columbia, Tairona culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A stunning necklace comprised of 43 carnelian and quartz crystal beads (the vast majority of which are ancient Tairona) arranged in an attractive, symmetrical design. The beads were carved in various forms - bullet, tubular, barrel, and lozenge shaped. The quartz crystal beads present various degrees of translucency when held to the light. The brilliant vermilion hues of the carnelian beads make a striking contrast to the colorless quartz, and all come together with a modern sterling silver clasp to create a lovely example of wearable art from the Tairona. Size: 21.75" L (55.2 cm); longest bead (quartz) 2.875" L (7.3 cm)

Provenance: private Probst collection, Monterey, California, USA, acquired in the mid-1970s to mid-1990s
