Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Sierra Nevada de Santa Maria, Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-built pottery ocarina in the form of a seated shaman exhibiting an abstract zoomorphic head. The figure sits cross-legged with a bar resting atop his knees and wears a frilled collar above an incised waistband. Incised teeth, nostrils, and eyes create an expressive visage, and a column of scales courses down his back. A mouthpiece atop his head creates a low-pitched sound that can be altered via 2 tone holes on the verso. Size: 4.5" W x 5.2" H (11.4 cm x 13.2 cm)
