Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. An ancient greenstone frog pendant from the ancient Tairona culture, horizontally perforated through its upper center to allow suspension. The Tairona would have heard the chorus of frogs and toads as rain arrived, and the connection between frogs and lifegiving water means that many frog images are carved from greenstone, which was symbolically connected to water itself. Modern turquoise and greenstone seed beads as well as a modern cord and sterling silver clasp turn this into a wearable necklace! Size of pendant: 1.1" H (2.8 cm); length of cord: 18" L (45.7 cm)

Provenance: private Probst collection, Monterey, California, USA, acquired in the mid-1970s to mid-1990s
