Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved stone celt or axe with a double headed body. The central part of the stone is indented, and this area is for attaching the celt head to a shaft or handle. One head is slightly square with a tapered sharpened edge for cutting. The butt end has a small curved notch to create two ridges. The surface is smooth and has lovely grey and speckled white inclusions. Celts were tools for chopping and cutting that were sometimes used as weapons, but often were used for ceremonial rituals. Lucite stand for photography purposes only.
