Description:

Pre-Columbian, Caribbean, perhaps Dominican Republic, Taino (Arawak) peoples, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved stone figure depicting a female deity - known as a zemi - with a protruding abdomen indicative of pregnancy. The enlarged head features oversized eyes beneath a furrowed brow, a slender nose with flared nostrils, a slender mouth, and a shallow groove surrounding the front of her brow. This figure is perhaps associated with the Itiba Cahubaba, the Taino goddess of pregnancy, perhaps as a minimalist effigy of her or a representation of a zemi deity who serves her. Size: 4.25" W x 8.625" H (10.8 cm x 21.9 cm)
