Description:

Pre-Columbian, Caribbean / Florida, Arawak People, Taino, ca. 11th to 15th century CE. A shallow stone basin, made by hammering, pecking, and smoothing the concave surface. The artist who created this had to intimately know the weaknesses of the stone in order to not crack it as he or she worked. Many similar objects are found near the northern coast of Haiti, in the mountainous region of Dondon, where stone was readily available. A small split lip on one end allowed the contents prepared within the vessel to be poured. Size: 7.9" L x 10.75" W x 2.05" H (20.1 cm x 27.3 cm x 5.2 cm)
