Description:

Pre-Columbian, Caribbean/Florida, Arawak People, Taino, ca. 15th century CE. Among the only type of artifacts specifically referenced by Spanish chroniclers of the 15th century, this is a three-pointed zemi figure that could also have doubled as a hafted, ceremonial axe head. A zemi head projects from one side with meticulously pecked and incised skeletal features including a pair of deep-socketed round eyes and a wide open mouth. This piece is among the various cult objects associated with the worship of "zemis" - deities, ancestors, or earth spirits revered by the Taino culture. Size: 7.2" W x 5.4" H (18.3 cm x 13.7 cm)
