Pre-Columbian, Caribbean area, perhaps Dominican Republic, Taino (Arawak) Indians, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. An abstract simian head that is hand-carved from dense, light-brown stone. The expressive countenance includes protruding eyes, sunken cheeks, a rounded nose with delineated nostrils, and a broad mouth. Perhaps a ceremonial pounder or a religious implement, this monkey head perhaps served a variety of ritualistic functions. Size: 3.375" L x 3" W x 4.5" H (8.6 cm x 7.6 cm x 11.4 cm)
