Pre-Columbian, Hispaniola or Porto Rico, Arawak Peoples, ca. 15th century CE. Lovely Taino deep black stone pounder of almost rounded form, carved with slightly widened base at used end and an anthropomorphic human head on other. The head has deep drilled eyes, raised nose and string-cut mouth. At the rear of the head are hand and arm-like appendages that may represent folded arms or possible a zoomorphic/transformational creature. Quite a fine and rare example! Size: 3.25" W x 7" H (8.3 cm x 17.8 cm)
