Description:

Ancient Near East, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2800 to 1500 BCE. An abstract pottery figure of the goddess Astarte, made to have a simple physical form until it reaches the arms and shoulders, where it becomes more detailed. Her arms curve up to touch her chest, and she wears a segmented necklace around her thick neck. A conical head bears circular eyes with central slits, a prominent triangular nose, and petite ears, a stylized presentation that is instantly recognizable from this period. The design of the eyes relates to the common motif throughout the ancient Near East that eyes must be large and attentive to show religious devotion. Astarte is the goddess who is also known as Ishtar in some parts of Mesopotamia and is associated with femininity, motherhood, and war. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 1.2" W x 4.5" H (3 cm x 11.4 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.
