Description:

Near East, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2800 to 1500 BCE. This is a very rare handmade terracotta figure of a stylized human figure with a bearded face and a pointed, curled hat. His arms blend into the horse's body, which is highly abstract, just a head projecting from the human figure's chest with large round applied eyes and a body that is made of two slanting slabs joined together in an acute angle, with nubs for legs/feet. The effect is charming and instantly recognizable as a horse and rider. This piece is part of a long tradition in the ancient Near East of pottery figures depicting both religious themes and themes of everyday life. It was probably made to be a ritual offering and may have been an accessory to a large figure like a cart or army. Size: 3" L x 1.6" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 4.1 cm x 12.7 cm)
