Description:

Ancient Near East, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2800 to 1500 BCE. A hand-built pottery wagon used as a toy for a child. The lengthy wagon body has an arching top incised with intricate linear motifs, a concave base, and a quartet of protruding tabs with pierced holes meant to hold a wheel axle. Carts like this typically had additional horses, reins, and even anthropomorphic figures riding inside. This piece is part of a long tradition in the ancient Near East of pottery figures depicting both religious themes and themes of everyday life. Size: 5.125" L x 2.7" W x 3.2" H (13 cm x 6.9 cm x 8.1 cm).

  • Condition: Old figures, animals, axles, and wheels missing. Back end repaired from multiple large pieces with light resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to body, base, and pierced tabs, with softening to some incised details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
