Description:

Ancient Near East, Northern Syria, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A finely preserved example of a hand-built pottery figure depicting Astarte, an ancient goddess known throughout the Near East and Central Asia by many names who is primarily associated with fertility, femininity, motherhood, and war. Astarte presents wearing a triangular loin cloth and a belt with dozens of petite impressions while cupping the underside of her breasts with both hands. Her necklace and bangs bear additional patterned impressions and frame her stylized visage which exhibits a thin mouth beneath a beak-like nose. Size: 2.75" W x 5.8" H (7 cm x 14.7 cm); 6.5" H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Small losses to lower periphery of feet and top of face as shown. Nicks to peripheries and verso, with pressure fissures to areas of back, and minor softening to some finer details on obverse. Great preservation to detailing and nice earthen deposits throughout.
