Description:

Ancient Near East, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2800 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built pottery fertility figure with highly abstract female characteristics. The woman has rounded legs below a protruding perhaps pregnant belly and pendulous breasts or arms that jut out below the head. The neck and head are dotted with incised marks forming the coiffure. The rounded and curvaceous details emphasize her femininity and fertility. The beige surface has dark burnished areas that add a lovely contrast to the lighter hues. Fertility idols like this example were first produced as early as the 9th millennium BCE and have been found throughout the ancient Near East. Lucite stand for photography purposes only. Size: 4.25" L x 1.5" W (10.8 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Keller collection, Marbury, Alabama, USA; via descent from grandfather, acquired in Toro, Spain, ca. 1940s
