Description:

Ancient Near East, northern Syria, Syro-Hittite, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A fascinating pottery figure of a goddess displaying a stylized form with an avianesque visage of a pinched, beak-like nose and huge, annular eyes. Surmounted by a prominent brow and crested coiffure, the ancient goddess wears several thick layered necklaces that hang across her broad shoulders and a floor-length, flared dress. Her arms are bent at the elbows to resemble flapping wings with hands on her chest in a gesture of supplication. The design of the eyes relates to the ubiquitous motif throughout the ancient Near East that one's eyes must be wide and attentive to show religious devotion. Size: 1.9" W x 5.5" H (4.8 cm x 14 cm)
