Susan Kliewer (American, b. 1940). "Mischievous Ones" bronze artist proof 5 of 45, 2006. Signature, date, and edition number on one clown's outfit. A remarkable bronze by Susan Kliewer, one of the Southwest's most critically acclaimed sculptors. "Mischievous Ones" features five Pueblo Sacred Clowns engaged in playful antics upon a large Puebloan vessel. According to Mountain Trails Gallery, "Valued as teachers as well as ancestral spirits, these Pueblo Sacred Clowns poke fun with often mischievous antics. These characters come out at dances and act out attributes or unacceptable behavior often in an extreme fashion." In Kliewer's words, "Always mischievous, sometimes gluttonous, Koshare are a perfect satire of normal village life. Their entertaining antics are designed to teach while also making fun." A striking Kliewer bronze, replete with impressive artistry and technique, mounted upon a wood rotating base fit with an engraved brass plaque. Size: 18" H x 18" W x 17" D (45.7 cm x 45.7 cm x 43.2 cm)
About the artist: A native of Southern California, Susan Kliewer has lived in Arizona for 40 years, with 5 of those years at the Marble Canyon Trading Post adjacent to the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona. Kliewer started painting when she was 10 years old and took up sculpture in 1987 after working at a foundry for 10 years. In 1993, Kliewer won a competition to create a monument of Sedona Schnebly. In addition, she created a life-size fountain that portrays the Sinagua people as well as a fountain of a Hopi Water Maiden in Sedona. In her words, "My work aims to show the common thread that underlies all human experience, and which, I hope, brings us to a greater understanding between peoples."
