Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit culture, ca. 200 BCE - 200 CE. An impressive ceramic figure representing a fierce standing warrior wielding a large macehead, dressed in elaborate regalia, all decorated via the negative resist technique mastered by the Nayarit culture. This handsome figure wears a wonderfully detailed tunic painted in black and white on red ground, a conical helmet with plaited band and black and white negative resist decoration on red ground, intricate shell motif ear ornaments, a large lunar shaped nose ring also decorated in negative resist technique, and a painted five strand, white beaded pectoral. Behold his visage! Covered with intricate geometric-patterned tattoos, his face with its wide-eyed expression and toothy grimace is boldly facing the enemy! Measures 16 1/2" (42 cm) tall. Provenance: Ex-private Laguna Niguel, CA collection, acquired prior to 1995.
