Description:

Roman, Early Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. An attractive, mold-formed terracotta oil lamp with a slightly concave base, rounded walls, a deep tondo with a petite fill hole, and a wide wick spout flanked by laterally protruding points. Within the recessed tondo is a stylized depiction of a single rider with a conical cap mounted atop a pair of horses, their heads touching as they 'leap' over the fill hole. The equestrian rider displays a shirtless torso, perhaps indicating his role as a performer or an acrobat who entertained throngs of spectators. Fine remains of orange slip are visible across the vessel. Size: 3.9" L x 2.8" W x 1" H (9.9 cm x 7.1 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Mazard collection, France, 1970s
