Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautiful mold-made terracotta oil lamp. The vessel exhibits a flat base with a recessed planta pedis (maker's mark), rounded walls, angled shoulders with a concentric ring design, a small fill hole, and an intricate, projecting wick spout. The recessed tondo displays a finely-detailed scene of a dog pouncing on the nape of a hooved boar in a classic running stance, perhaps fleeing the aggressive canine. Enveloped in a red-orange slip, this is a fantastic example of stylized Roman pottery artistry! Size: 3.875" L (9.8 cm).

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields and Riverbend Gallery
