Description:

Roman, ca. 200 to 300 CE. This incredibly fine pyriform jug was free-blown; it has a dimpled bottom with a broken pontil mark. It has a clean, simple foot and rim and an applied strap handle created from a trail of glass. The greenish glass of this delicate jug is so clear that you can see the bubbles left from the glass blowing process. There is also a slight iridescent patina, especially around the neck. Glass blowing, invented in the Roman Middle East, revolutionized the Roman household by creating cheap, quick-to-manufacture vessels for everyday use. Glass vessels moved effortlessly through the Roman trading network during the Imperial period and so it is almost impossible to know where a particular piece of Roman glassware was manufactured or used. For example, when legions moved from frontier to frontier, all of the fine glassware used by generals would move with them; a jug made in Gaul could travel to Hadrian's Wall. Similarly, it is difficult to know what a jug like this was used for, because it was probably used to hold many different things throughout its life before ultimately becoming a grave good. Size: 6-3/4" tall, 4" in diameter at its widest point. Provenance: Ex-Denenberg Fine Arts, Los Angeles, CA. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. • Condition: This piece is completely intact with no signs of cracking or repair. There is a small amount of dirt caked around the handle; otherwise, aside from a slight iridescence, it is clear.
