Description:

Roman Imperial to Middle Byzantine Period, ca. 300 to 1200 CE. A beautiful collection of fifty-eight ancient Roman and Byzantine beads, made from glass and stone, strung on a modern necklace strand capped with a gold-filled loop and S-hook clasp. The beads are mostly cylindrical, spherical, or ovoid in form, with a number exhibiting more than one color. Created using core-forming and frazzling techniques, the beads display zigzag, chevron, floral, abstract, foliate, and linear motifs, with some beads of the millefiori type depicting more than one decorative pattern. The largest central bead is presented in a red-brown hue with applied opaque white glass in concentric circular motifs. A stunning and wearable example of ancient glass-making techniques! Size (necklace): 22.5" L (57.2 cm); size (largest bead): 0.9" W (2.3 cm).
