Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A solid bronze figure depicting a standing Mars (Ares), god of warfare, nude save his ridged helmet, and holding a large round shield with a ribbed omphalos emerging from the outer face. The sculptor's attention to anatomy and pose are quintessentially classical - the body exhibiting balanced proportions, finely delineated musculature, and a slight weight shift with his left hand on his waist and his left hip thrusted slightly forward. His head is angled toward the left and his nicely delineated visage peers to the distance. He stands proudly upon a tiered, circular base. Size: 3.875" H (9.8 cm)

Mars (Greek Ares) was the god of war - son to Jupiter and Juno (Greek Zeus and Hera) and one of the Twelve Olympians. His sister Minerva (Greek Athena) was the goddess of war. Whereas Mars/Ares traditionally represents the fiery, violent aspects of combat, his sister Minerva/Athena usually represents intellectual military strategy.
