Description:

North Africa, Agadir, Morocco, Mid-Cretaceous period, ca. 112 to 99.6 million years ago. Heteromorph or "uncoiled" ammonites are a type of cephalopod that are much more rare than typical solid coil ammonites. This type of heteromorph ammonite features an open coil with space in between each whorl to the center. The exact species is not determined but these circular varieties are even more rare than the J-shaped open coil specimens found in the same region. This unusually large example has been prepared fully exposed with a portion of the rock left attached to form a natural base to stand on. From the coastal Cretaceous fossil layers of Agadir, Morocco, heteromorph ammonites of this circular, open-coil nature are rarely found in this size class. This ammonite can be viewed on both sides and both sides exhibit all natural chamber detail. Size: 15.5" W x 14.25" H (39.4 cm x 36.2 cm)
