Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, Nicoya Region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A female polychrome ceramic Venus figure possessing the elegant stylings of the Guanacaste-Nicoya artisans. The striking painted decorative program in red and black on a cream-hued ground demonstrates the artist's skillful technique. She is quintessentially female and her pronounced breasts and "Wonder Woman" hands-on- hips pose accentuates her bold take on femininity. The entire surface is ornately decorated. Intricate geometric patterns adorn her headdress and serve as body paint and/or garments - simultaneously accentuating the curves of her body and captivating the eye. Scholars suggest that this female effigy was most likely placed in the grave of an important ruler to grant him rebirth in the afterlife. Size: 4.75" W x 9.375" H (12.1 cm x 23.8 cm)
