Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador / Colombia, Carchi-Narino region, ca. 750 to 1500 CE. A rare, magnificently painted ceramic sculpture of a seated coca chewer. She is on a platform, dressed in a geometrically-patterned, floor-length skirt, with only her feet peeking out from underneath it. She has her hands resting on her thighs and leans forward slightly. Her face is painted with patterns similar to those on her skirt, perhaps representing tattoos. Her hair is depicted as a smooth sheet, painted black, that flows down from her head to rest upon her shoulders. Her mouth is pursed and her eyes bulge, emphasizing that she is in the act of using the drug, probably to enter a religious/shamanic state. Size: 6" L x 6.2" W x 6.5" H (15.2 cm x 15.7 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
