Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala/Chontal, ca. 600 to 400 BCE. Hand carved, string-cut, and drilled from a piece of mottled greenstone of pale blue-green hues with darker green and white inclusions - an expressive anthropomorphic figure, standing erect with arms down at his sides and hands across the abdomen with delineated fingers pointing upward. His frontal head presents a face with boldly delineated features including drilled eyes, long incised brows, a triangular-shaped nose with drilled nostrils, laugh lines, squared off ears pierced for ornamentation, and a somewhat smiling mouth that make for quite a bit of character. While Chontal stone sculpture deviates somewhat from the earlier Mezcala sculptural style by being relatively more naturalistic, this example clearly holds onto a taste for abstraction identified with the Mezcala. A wonderful example. Custom stand Size: 7" H (17.8 cm); 7.5" H (19 cm) on stand
