Lot 21
Italy, Apulia, Messapia, 4th century BCE. A pottery trozella, a vase characterized by dual disks, one at the top of each handle and another at the base. Trozella means "little wheels". These were made as grave goods. This particular example has finely painted black and red artwork in floral and sun designs as well as bands of color around the body and on the rim and handles. The floral designs date this to the later period of their manufacture (which began in the 7th century BCE); these designs joined with the native geometric ones as seen on the handles with the addition of Greek influence in the area. Compare an almost identical example from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Size: 7.9" W x 10.6" H (20.1 cm x 26.9 cm)
Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
