North America, Western United States, Montana, Fort Union Formation, Late Cretaceous to Paleocene period, ca. 66 to 58 million years ago. A large, fossilized leaf in a warm pink hued stone matrix, possibly a prehistoric hickory tree species. The midribs and veining are well preserved and clearly visible. The Fort Union formation primarily dates to the Paleocene epoch, the period after the dinosaur extinction event, characterized by massive trees, alongside swamp, river, and lake environments. Size of leaf: 6.75" L x 3.75" W (17.1 cm x 9.5 cm); stone matrix: 6.75" L x 6.5" W (17.1 cm x 16.5 cm)
