Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful hand-built pottery male musician holding a flute or ocarina in one hand. The figure sits on bent legs with a flat back, rounded shoulders, sinuous arms, and a thick neck. His head displays characteristic Jalisco "sheepface" qualities such as pointed ears with round earspools, a conical nose, thin mouth, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, and a tall forehead with a highly-stylized and crested headband. Chalky-white painted embellishments adorn the figure atop a deep-red slip, thereby providing this example with a fabulous appearance. Size: 10" H (25.4 cm).

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
