Description:

Central Asia, India / Pakistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. Stunning stucco over terracotta head of a bearded man. Showing strong greek influences, he wears a pointed cap - almost Phrygian looking - with added circular buttons; a headband decorates his forehead, and a medium length beard is nicely coiffed beneath a thin mustache. Liberal remains of pink, blue, and black pigments reminiscent of Canosan pottery created some 500+ years earlier. Size: 11" H (27.9 cm)

Alexander the Great traveled through Gandhara in the 4th century BCE. Many of his soldiers settled down in this region and their Greek influence can clearly be seen in the art of the region.

Provenance: private Dere family collection, acquired pre-1990.
