Description:

Southern Peru, Ca 400 to 100 BCE. A stunning set of two textile woven mantle fringe sections - called muneca from the Spanish for doll. Woven in camelid fiber, the cross-knit borders of two mantles with twenty-three stylized figures, each with long sweeping hair, bodies in temple-stepped patterns in alternating colors including deep red, tan, white, dark brown, maroon, green and teal blue. The lower panel of nine figures contains some of the largest munecas we have ever seen. Mounted to dark linen and custom framed. Top row measures 22" W from head to head, bottom measures 18". Frame size is 29" by 22".

PROVENANCE: Ex-John-Platt Collection, ex-Daniel M. Friedenberg. Daniel M. Friedenberg was president of John-Platt Enterprises, Inc.
