Central Asia, Anatolia, southwestern Turkey , Pleistocene era, ca. 100,000 years ago. A remarkable fossilized crab, Potamon potamios, also known as the sweetwater or freshwater Levantine crab, preserved in a travertine matrix. The crab was preserved in a natural cavity - perhaps a burrow in the sediment where it died and fossilized, encased in its home / tomb. The stone is mounted in a modern acrylic case. Size of stone matrix: 3.75" L x 3" W x 1" H (9.5 cm x 7.6 cm x 2.5 cm); case: 4.5" L x 3.3" W x 2.75" H (11.4 cm x 8.4 cm x 7 cm)
