Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A fine textile fragment, tightly-woven from natural camelid (llama or alpaca) fibers in hues of claret red, golden caramel, chocolate brown, and jet black. The composition features an abstract wild feline - most likely a jaguar. The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. Mounted on a black fabric backing and set in a Lucite box frame. Size of Lucite box: 10.75" W x 7.25" H (27.3 cm x 18.4 cm); Size of textile: 8" W x 4" H (20.3 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Nathan collection, New Jersey, USA acquired approximately 20 years ago from a New York dealer. Almost exact same motif is on exhibit at The MET from the collection of Arthur Bullowa - collected in the 1920s.
