Description:

Byzantium (formerly Eastern Roman Empire, modern Turkey), ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A beautiful bronze cast Byzantine cross with four flaring arms that terminate in pairs of arrow-like or abstract petal-like forms, the front with four round cavities at the end of each arm and one looped cross-like form in the center. These five cavities, symbolizing the "Five Wounds of Christ," were more than likely once inlaid with glass. In addition, the entire front surface is engraved with repeated miniature concentric circles. The lower terminus was intended to be inserted or attached to a processional staff. A fine example with a beautifully aged surface and gorgeous plum hued patina! Custom stand. An elegant ancient symbol of Christian faith and spirituality. Size: cross itself measures 5.25" W x 8" H (13.3 cm x 20.3 cm); 9"H (22.9 cm) on stand

Provenance: Ex - private New Jersey collection formed between 1960 and 1985
