Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 250 to 800 CE. An exceptional Costa Rican jade pendant comprised of translucent blue-green jadeite, expertly string cut with an intriguing representation of a bird, perhaps an eagle or other raptor, its head/abstract visage and extended wings finely delineated. The attention to detail is very impressive: notice the incised diagonal striations adorning the wings, those low-relief eyes, and the finely delineated toes/claws and a crest atop the avian's head. Biconically drilled for suspension at upper junctures between head and wings. In the Pre-Columbian World, birds were regarded as animals of the celestial realm that served as messengers between humankind and their deities. Size: 2" W x 1.875" H (5.1 cm x 4.8 cm)
