Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A finely carved horse made from a single piece of Hetian (nephrite) jade, with traces of red cinnabar still visible on the surface. The figure stands on a flat base adorned with scrolling cloud or vegetal motifs around the hooves. The horse's head is slightly lowered, and delicate incised details are visible throughout. The jade exhibits a natural mottling, with a hazel-green hue on the snout, legs, and base that becomes luminous when backlit, while the body is an opaque creamy white-beige. The remaining cinnabar pigment contrasts beautifully with the pale jade. Size: 3.5" L x 1.5" W x 3.6" H (8.9 cm x 3.8 cm x 9.1 cm).
