Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel in the form of an adorable llama standing atop a quartet of petite legs. The bulbous, ovoid body has a spout hole centered atop the back, a conical tail curling on the posterior, and a thick neck on the front. The raised camelid head is wrapped with rein cords and boasts projecting ears, large ovoid eyes, and flared nostrils, with swaths of black pigment accentuating the face, eyes, back, and tail. A charming example of fine ceramic artistry from ancient Peru! Size: 11.5" L x 5.625" W x 9.875" H (29.2 cm x 14.3 cm x 25.1 cm).

  • Condition: Repairs to front legs with resurfacing over break lines. Professional restoration to area of back left leg and hip, with nearly-invisible resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to body and head, with light encrustations within some recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits and great traces of original pigmentation throughout.
